The word diabetes (/ˌdaɪ.əˈbiːtiːz/ or /ˌdaɪ.əˈbiːtɪs/) comes from Latin diabētēs, which in turn comes from Ancient Greek διαβήτης (diabētēs), which literally means "a passer through; a siphon". Ancient Greek physician Aretaeus of Cappadocia (fl. 1st century CE) used that word, with the intended meaning "excessive discharge of urine", as the name for the disease. Ultimately, the word comes from Greek διαβαίνειν (diabainein), meaning "to pass through," which is composed of δια- (dia-), meaning "through" and βαίνειν (bainein), meaning "to go". The word "diabetes" is first recorded in English, in the form diabete, in a medical text written around 1425.

, Rosie Perkins Diabetes mellitus occurs throughout the world but is more common (especially type 2) in more developed countries. The greatest increase in rates has however been seen in low- and middle-income countries, where more than 80% of diabetic deaths occur. The fastest prevalence increase is expected to occur in Asia and Africa, where most people with diabetes will probably live in 2030. The increase in rates in developing countries follows the trend of urbanization and lifestyle changes, including increasingly sedentary lifestyles, less physically demanding work and the global nutrition transition, marked by increased intake of foods that are high energy-dense but nutrient-poor (often high in sugar and saturated fats, sometimes referred to as the "Western-style" diet).
What Causes Type 2 Diabetes? Vision Health Low-grade fever (less than 101.5 F or 38.6 C): Fever is one sign of infection. Many common infections can potentially be more dangerous for diabetic patients than for other people. Note any symptoms that may indicate where the infection is located, such as painful urination, redness or swelling of the skin, abdominal pain, chest pain, or cough.

Fertility ClonaCell™ “[Metformin] has been considered a first-line medication in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and it mainly acts by lowering the amount of glucose released by the liver,” says Minisha Sood, MD, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “It also helps a hormone called insulin to work better by helping muscles use glucose in a more efficient manner. When insulin works better (and insulin sensitivity improves), a person’s insulin levels are lower than they would be otherwise.”
2013 8 No. I am pre-diabetic/Insulin Resistance. Took Glucose Tolerance test and nearly passed out. Basically, you drink a beverage slightly sweeter than Pepsi on an empty stomach and they take a blood sample every 30 minutes. My sugar and insulin shot up during first 30 minutes. Then the insulin shot up some more, some more, some more, then it starting working and my sugar went down to 53 and I nearly passed out. So I asked the doctor if I am in jeaopardy if I consume a Pepsi on an empty stomach, maybe I should be on diabetes medicine even if I’m not fully diabetic yet. She put me on metformin. I have not noticed any reduction in appetite, but my percent body fat has been declining at a steady pace since I started taking it. I have been on a very low carb diet and have been exercising over 1 1/2 hours a day and my weight was steadily creeping up. The metformin reversed that. I have heard that you cannot burn fat when insulin is in your blood. I think metformin gets the sugar taken care of and then the insulin leaves your blood, allowing fat to be burned.
